Secret Marriages and Fantastic Tales

It’s that time of the month where I publish a post on musical events for next February in Lucca area. Here it is!


On Friday, February 7th at 8.30 PM and Sunday, February 9th at 4 PM the Teatro Del Giglio presents Cimarosa’s Secret Marriage conducted by Julian Kovatchev with the Luigi Cherubini Youth Orchestra. Direction is by Italo Nunziata with stage settings by Pasquale Grossi. The production is in collaboration with the Ravenna Festival. Ticket prices range from Euros 15 to 60. On Saturday 22nd at 8.30 PM and Sunday 23rd at 4 PM the Teatro Del Giglio presents its season’s fourth opera, Offenbach’s Tales of Hoffman. The singers come from the Laboratory LTL Opera Studio 2013, which combines theatres from Pisa, Livorno, Lucca and Novara. Guy Condette conducts the Orchestra Archè. Direction is by Nicola Zorzi. The Associazione Musicale Lucchese presents four concerts and two conferences all starting at 5 PM: Saturday 1st, in the Ademollo Hall at the Palazzo Ducale, a conference on “The Book of Revelation: finite time, infinite life? “. Participating are Gabriella Caramore and Father Benedict Mathieu. The meeting will serve as an introduction to the concert on Sunday 2nd at the Micheletto Auditorium when Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time will be performed by Fabrizio Giovannelli (piano), Alberto Bologni (violin), Remo Pieri (clarinet) and Vittorio Ceccanti (cello). Narrator is Ugo Pagliai. Sunday 9th, at the San Micheletto auditorium, Emy Bernecoli (violin) and Massimo Giuseppe Bianchi (piano) will perform music by Gershwin, Ives, Copland and Zappa. Sunday 16th, again at the San Micheletto auditorium, Miriam Prandi (cello) and Edward Turbil (piano) perform music by Bach, Boccherini, Schumann and Say. Saturday 22nd, (Ademollo Hall), Domenico Manzione presents his book “Il mio amico Chet” dedicated to the American trumpeter Chet Baker. Sunday 23rd (San Micheletto auditorium) pianist Alessandro Lanzoni plays music by Debussy, Gershwin, Lanzoni, Giani-Luporini, Kern and Waller.

Tuesday, 4th at 3 PM the AML “Musica Ragazzi” season for young people returns to the Teatro Del Giglio. This season is dedicated to Herbert Handt on the 50th anniversary of his founding the AML .The first event will be a chance to attend rehearsals for the “L’amore all ‘opera, che emozione!” show.  The show will be repeated on Thursday, 6th at 6 PM with free admission. Saturday 15th in the San Micheletto auditorium there will be a lecture-concert by young artists Miriam Prandi (cello) and Edoardo Turbil (piano). On Thursday, February 27 at 9.15 pm the Misericordia di Lucca, in collaboration with the Teatro Del Giglio, presents the classic operetta The Merry Widow. Performing Lehar’s famous work will be “La Compagnia dell ‘Operetta”. The role of Hanna Glavaij will be sung by soprano Eleonora Pirondi, while Count Danilo Damilowitch will be sung by tenor Massimiliano Constantino. The opera will be conducted by Maurizio Bogliolo, directed by Marco Prosperini and choreographed by Monica Emmi. Tickets are on sale at the Teatro Del Giglio’s box office and the proceeds will go to help provide new ambulances for the Misericordia.



In February there will be the following free events: on Monday 3rd (9 PM in the Catalani room at  the San Luca Palace Hotel) a listening guide to Cimarosa’s Secret Marriage with soprano Silvia Tocchini ; Sunday 9th trip to the Florence’s city theatre for Puccini’s Madama Butterfly; Monday 17th (9 PM at the San Luca Palace hotel) listening guide to Offenbach’s  Tales of Hoffmann “; Sunday 23rd (9 PM at the Scuola Sinfonia) a St. Valentine’s Day show with actors Vanessa Gravina and Edoardo Siravo (see photo) . The Cenacolo delle Muse association organizes cultural trips to theatres to attend interesting Italian opera productions. Saturday, February 22nd will be the turn of Rossini’s Barber of Seville at Venice’s La Fenice. Among the main singers are George Misseri (Count Almaviva), Omar Montanari (Bartolo), Marina Comparato (Rosina) and Julian Kim (Figaro), conducted by Giovanni Battista Rigon and directed by Bepi Morassi.
