ORCHESTRA OF RAI WITH ALEXANDER LONQUICH
Saturday 24th (9 pm) at the Teatro del Giglio, the RAI National Symphony Orchestra will perform with Alexander Lonquich in the dual role of soloist and conductor with an all-Mozart programme (Concertos for Piano and Orchestra, K453 and K482 , Symphony K425) . There are also two conferences in the Sala Accademia Hall of the Palazzo Ducale, one by Michele Dall’Ongaro (Friday 23rd at 5 pm) and one by Giovanni Bietti (Friday 30th at 6.30 pm). The festival also includes the screening of two films: the cartoon Piano Forest (Friday 9th at 9.30 pm, San Micheletto) and Una fragile armonia (Tuesday 13th at 9.30 pm, Astra Cinema). CONTEMPORARY MUSIC WITH CLUSTER
CLUSTER resumes its activities in raising awareness of Lucca’s composers and their music in Italy and abroad. There are five appointments this month beginning with three shows in the auditorium of the Fondazione Banca del Monte di Lucca (see photo). 2nd May at 5 pm, the students of the Passaglia Music School will perform an original show prepared by teachers Mauro Fabbri and Guido Masini; Saturday 17th show prepared by the students of the Jam School of Lucca while on Saturday 24th there will be a performance by the Atzori Brunini Guitar-Duo, with music by CLUSTER composers. Thursday 29th (9 pm, Oratorio Angeli Custodi) concert called “From Lucca in Berlin”, in collaboration with Lukas Kantorei Berlin, where the concert will be previewed on the 9th and 10th of this month. Music of German and CLUSTER composers will alternate. Performers are Michelle Buscemi (soprano), Mattia Campetti (baritone), Gerd Rosinsky (organ) and the Diocesan Choir of the R. Baralli School. Finally, from May 10 to June 2(BML Foundation), the original composition Sospesa by Gianmarco Caselli will be the background to Lucca painter Eleonora Rossi’s exhibition.
SAGRA MUSICALE LUCCHESE MAY CONCERTS
The 51st edition of the Music Festival of Lucca continues. Saturday 3rd (9.15 PM , St. Martin’s Cathedral) concert by the Choir of St. George’s Anglican Church in Paris conducted by Peter Hicks and accompanied on the organ by Simon Lawford . Soloist Lucie Louvrier. Sunday 11th (at 6pm, Church of St. Pietro Somaldi) “Cantilena Antiqua” and “Concentus Lucensis” will perform the 14th century Missa Tornacensis conducted by Stephen Albarello. 17th (9.15 pm, church of Santa Maria Corteorlandini) concert by the “Convitto Armonico” conducted by Stefano Buschini. Organist Marco Montanelli. Sunday 25th (6 pm, church of Santa Maria Corteorlandini), ” The Sacred Music of Venice in 1700 … it was not only Vivaldi”. BOCCHERINI OPEN: A GUITAR FESTIVAL AND OTHER EVENTS
The artistic and cultural season of the “Boccherini” institute events continues with free concerts. The Four Seasons by Vivaldi will be performed on the 3rd at 7 pm in the Church of St. Francesco, with Piero Nannini and violinist Alessandro Cappone accompanied by the Orchestra of the “Boccherini” conducted by GianPaolo Mazzoli . Thursday, 8th at 10 am is a lecture-recital on Chopin Ballades by the musicologist, Guido Salvetti.
From 14th to 16th the “Boccherini Guitar Festival” will open with El Amor Brujo by Manuel De Falla in an unpublished transcription for ensemble of eight guitars, soprano, bass and percussion starring the “Boccherini Guitar Consort,” singer Racheal Trovatelli, Edoardo Teani on bass and Nicola Pardini on percussion. Thursday, 15th concerts at 6 pm with Pietro Locatto in Canciones y Danzas and at 9 pm with Francesco Bernier and a recital called Evocacion. Friday, 16th, seminar (11 am) and concert (9 pm) by Lorenzo Micheli , focusing on the famous Caprichos de Goya by M. Castelnuovo Tedesco, while at 3 pm Gabriele Lodi will talk about “The tradition of violin making in Spain”. At 6 pm students from the guitar class of the Boccherini Institute will present a musical tribute to Joaquin Rodrigo. Friday, 23rd, (9 pm, Church of St. Maria Bianca) Concert Music and Joy with the Boccherini Carducci Youth Orchestra and the choir of the Boccherini institute (chorus master: Sara Matteucci) conducted by Carlo Alberto Valenti. THE LITTLE CHIMNEY SWEEP OF BRITTEN FOR OPEN DAY
May events of the Istituto Musicale “L. Boccherini ” will culminate on Saturday 31st with an Open Day , a full day of music in which the musical school will be open to the general public, who can visit the Institute and attend lectures, performances, cultural events and concerts free of charge. As part of this event Britten’s The little Sweep (see photo) will be performed, with musical direction by GianPaolo Mazzoli and conducted by Giovanna Morelli (see full cast page 13.) Performances at 10 am for schools only and at 6 pm for the general public.
CONCERT FOR THE “HOLY CROSS ‘ OF MAY
The Choral Group “S. Felicita” offers a “Tribute to Giacomo Puccini” on Saturday 3rd at 9.15 PM at the Church of Santa Maria Corteorlandini (see photo). Free entry. The “St. Felicita ” choir will also join the choirs of “High School Vallisneri” of Lucca , the” Santa Cecilia ” Buti , the” Bruno Pizzi ” of Pisa, ” Dominic Savio” in Livorno , accompanied on the organ by Gian Michele Bachini and on the piano by Ilaria Brunini . The concert will be conducted by Silvano Pieruccini. Program: Stabat Mater in 8 voices by Palestrina, Mozart’s Adoramus te Christe, Motetto di San Benedetto and 4 part Te Deum by Giacomo Puccini senior (1712-1781) and Messa di San Francesco by Ciro Galloni Filippi.

PUCCINI POSTCARD DEDICATED TO TOSCA
Sunday 4th (at 6 pm) at di San Girolamo is the premiere of The Fall of the House of Usher by the young composer from Lucca, Federico Favali, who also wrote the libretto, based on Poe’s short story. Giuseppe Bruno conducts, the three protagonists are Maria Lorenzini, Ricardo Crampton and John Paul Hukle and direction is by Emanuele Leg. TRIBUTE TO CHET BAKER
From 3rd to 10th at the Barracks of San Regolo (city walls) there is a tribute (from 4 pm to 8 pm) to Chet Baker, the famous trumpet player who linked his human and artistic events to the city’s history. We will also have on the 3rd, at 5 pm, an introduction by Renzo Cresti and a concert by Giuseppe Nannini and Damian Calloni; 5th (9 pm), the screening of the film “Let’s Get Lost”; 9th (5.30 pm) on the city walls, in front of the prison of St. George, a performance by John Vito and Thomas, Antonello Vannucchi, Francesco Lento and Nicola Angelucci. The same artists will be performing on Saturday 10th (9 pm, Church of St. Francesco) in the concert “Remembering Chet.” Admission is free.
CIRCLE OF “A. CATALANI” FRIENDS OF MUSIC
The “Catalani” Circle of Friends of Music is organizing a trip to Genoa’s Carlo Felice Theatre on Sunday 11th for a performance of Bizet’s Carmen, with Francesco Meli, Serena Gamberoni, and Sonia Ganassi. Friday 23rd, the club offers a convivial meeting with a trip and dinner in Volterra, for the festival of “Cene galeotte “, a project of social reintegration of prisoners in the prison of Volterra. On May 9th, (8.30 pm) the “Symphony Fridays” events start up again with an evening dedicated to women in jazz. Three teachers of the “Symphony” music school , Federica Gennai (vocals), Daniel Pacchini (guitar) and Daniel Giuntoli (piano), will present famous songs by great authors , united by the portrayal of women who represent the history and the different styles of jazz from Billie Holiday to Norma Winstone and from Ella Fitzgerald to Marilyn Monroe. On Friday the 16th (8.30 pm) “The pianist, flutist and composer,” is a fun evening with a flute repertoire, including history, anecdotes and music of CPE Bach, Reinecke, Schubert and Schumann. MUSIC FLAM WORKSHOP
Continuing into May are the concerts of the tenth edition of the Cantiere Della Musica organized by Flam. Sunday 4th, (6 pm, Sala Tobino of the Palazzo Ducale) a concert with the Boccherini Chamber Orchestra (see photo) performing music by Bach and Vivaldi (Brandenburg Concertos and L’estro Armonico.) Saturday 10th at 6 pm, parish Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Villa Basilica) Messa Mariana, French polyphony of the fourteenth century with soloists and chorus accompanied by original instruments. THE SOUL’S SONGS IN S. GIULIA
Saturday 10th, at 9 pm in the church of Santa Giulia (Piazza del Suffragio), a show, I canti dell ‘anima, will be presented by UCAI of Lucca. The music is by Piero Nissim. At the piano, Meoli Franco, who also worked on the harmonies and arrangements of the songs in the programme. Piero Nissim and Maria Bruno (see photo) will be the singers. It is a program rich in character and intensity, with sacred texts and spirituality ranging from various times and liturgies.
NEW BOOK FOR LITTLE PERCUSSIONISTS
Matteo Cammisa (see photo), an accomplished Luccan musician, has written a new book for young percussionists called Coordiniamoci. Cammisa teaches introductory percussion at Istituto Musicale Luigi Boccherini of Lucca and has printed this book, given the lack of a text that teaches children aged six or seven years the approach to percussion. Cammisa has collected together all the exercises he has written for his students. The book is also available in English and will be presented on the 12th of this month at Berkeley University, San Francisco.

The Cenacolo delle muse plans two tours this month: the first for the first of May to Vicenza to attend a recital by Andras Schiff ( Mendelssohn , Schumann and Brahms) ; the second to Genoa , Sunday, 18th , to attend Bizet’s Carmen , conducted by Andrea Battistoni with Sonia Ganassi , Francesco Meli , Serena Prawns and Simon Orfila . NICOLA LUISOTTI IN SAN FRANCESCO
Saturday 3rd ( 5.30 pm , Church of St. Francesco ) , conductor Nicola Luisotti from Versilia and former student of the Luigi Boccherini musical institute , will hold a meeting open to all on issues relating to the profession of the musician, on the philosophy of the artist and on his own experiences, for the benefit of young students and others. A performance of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons with Alexander Capon, concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic, will follow.
PLACES AND SONGS OF MARIAN DEVOTION
The G. Puccini choir of Camigliano has two concerts of Marian devotion. The first is scheduled for Saturday, 10th at 9 pm in Tofori with the participation of the town’s parish choir and the “Puccini” Camigliano choir. The second on Sunday 18th (at 9 pm St. Mary’s Church Corteorlandini) again with the “Puccini Chorale” and the VoxAlia Singers of Lucca, conducted by Livio Picotti, will offer a repertoire of deep spirituality and devotion.
NAPOLEONIC AFTERNOON AT THE STATE ARCHIVES
Friday 2nd in the Lucca’s archive centre (Piazza Guidiccioni) at 4.30 pm a Napoleonic afternoon with the participation of the choir of St. George’s Anglican Church in Paris conducted by Peter Hicks, the historian Giulia Gorgone and journalist Massimo Nava. Admission is free.
